Week Six

Week Six of holding myself accountable

Week Six.

Week Six started out slowly. The weird flu thing from last week lingered and made for a very quiet and uninteresting Monday. Tuesday I said "enough is enough" and made a strong swing at accent practice, with a lot of research/repeat/record process for the Estuary English accent and the Modern RP. I have to say these have taken a dip over the years and so it's been fun getting back into it and tidying them up. Estuary would have to be my favourite - It all started with Catherine Tate many years ago and my love for the chavvy accents have grown from there. Just want to make sure I do it justice though!

It was Showreel week so you'll see my theme has been "preparation".

Wednesday, after another day of accent work from the comfort of my room, I again said "enough is enough" and congratulated myself on my progress by shouting myself a pint down on the canal in honour of this latest heatwave. I simply could not spend another day inside feeling like poo. One beer, turned into a couple of home made Aperols with my flatmate down by the canal - why pay 15 quid when you can make four at home for the same price! And it was nice to get out. Unfortunately the heat, the sun and the Aperol hit hard and it was an early night for me.

Thursday was finalising and writing down my character work - I'd done a lot of dreaming around the characters and their stories but it was time to put something down in writing.

For each character I wrote out the following (bearing in mind that I swing towards Chekhov with a sprinkling of Stanivlaski when it comes to scene prep):

  1. Who is the character and what is her story?

  2. What happened right before the scene began?

  3. What are the stakes of the scene?

  4. Where does the centre of the character sit? Who does the character remind me of? How do they walk, sit, stand, talk, etc?

  5. What is the atmosphere?

  6. What is the "state" of the Character? What is the psychological gesture to help me create this state?

  7. What is the intention of the character in the scene?

Then it was about finalising outfits and makeup looks for each character which I did with the advice of my long distance fashion adviser Dominique Scragg over in LA. Shout out to you Dom if you read these blogs. THANK YOU.

Then Friday was shoot day. Started off with a vocal warm up and a face mask before setting off to Barking - doing my makeup on tehw ay.

It was a great day, a long day, but a great day! Got it all done and I can't wait to see hwo it turns out and share it with you all!

On Saturday I congratulated myself with a slow start to the day, redoing my dails which I had taken off for the shoot before heading out to a late lunch with fellow NZ invader Mattias. A late lunch turned into a long lunch which turned into a spontaneous admission to All Points East (meeting a Hollywood Director on the bus along the way - just as you do in London!!!!!).

A fab night with Mattias, Brooke and some new friends - it was a VIBE.

Sunday (as you can imagine) was slow and mildly dusty/ verging on rusty where I did all my chores and took it very sleazy in anticpation of Week Seven. Looking forward to starting a week without sicknesss so I can give you guys some more exciting updates!!!

Win this week.

Showreel.

Shot my British showreel with Snowflix Snowreels out in Barking. Spent the week prepping accents and characters for Friday - three scripts, three characters, three energies.

I wanted to cover comedy (Modern RP accent), Drama (Estuary Accent) and romance which ended up in a Kiwi accent to target some of the different areas I can play in well.

God willing the new footage will make a greater draw for when I send out my third round of agency reach outs. Any tips and tricks anyone has for these reach outs would be great!

I've got a template email that I adjust to each individual agency which is why it takes a while to send with my professional showreel from NZ, my latest headshots, an accent class reel which this showreel will replace and a singing reel.

It's a journey. Feels like a struggle to get up on the foils but I'm hoping that this third round will prove successful and then I can start getting into the room.

My focus going forward is to continue my work on my accents and start booking in casting director workshops. At least then I can start creating those relationships. I have noticed some agency meet and greets as well with Mixing Networks and AKTA that could be useful.

Anyway, this week - SHOWREEL. Stay tuned for clips on the socials and once it's finalised I'll throw it on to my acting page.
